Experience the warmth, camaraderie, and joy of our choir. Whether you’re a seasoned singer or curious to try, you’ll find a welcoming community here, especially if you enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with good humour to accompany your singing.
Our choir leads congregational worship each Sunday morning, enriching the Eucharist with a blend of traditional anthems, contemporary settings, hymn accompaniment, and sung Psalm chants. The choir enjoys the variety of being accompanied by Organists and Pianists.
We also sing:
Occasional Sunday evening services (Evensong)
Major festivals, including Christmas, Easter, and Saints’ Days
To balance commitment and convenience, we alternate rehearsal nights each week:
One Thursday evening (7:45–9:00 pm)
One Friday evening (7:45–9:00 pm)
All rehearsals take place in the Church, where we work on upcoming anthems, service music, and hymns or songs, as well as have a good catch-up on how our week has been.
Informal, friendly, supportive - those words capture the heart of our choir. We celebrate each other’s progress, share musical insights, and cultivate an atmosphere where every voice is valued and matters. New members quickly discover that behind every harmony lies genuine encouragement.
The congregation often looks forward to our musical offerings as much as the liturgy itself. Over the years, our choir has become an integral thread in the worshipping life of St Lawrence, lifting hearts and deepening devotion through song.
Our earliest known choir photographs date back to the 1960s, showing children, parents, and grandparents singing side by side. Today, several members still serve after more than 40 years - some first joined as choristers in their school uniforms! That sense of family and continuity remains at our core. We remain committed members of the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) and occasionally join local events including singing at the Cathedral.
Reading music is an advantage but not a barrier. We encourage anyone with vocal ability and enthusiasm to:
Arrange a brief chat with our Director of Music, Robin Jones
Join rehearsals and services on a one-month trial basis
Decide if our choir fits your schedule and aspirations
You’ll find us demanding enough to grow your skills, yet relaxed enough to enjoy every note.
